Are the stories of the Louisiana mermaid woman real? What’s in the water down there to cause people to think they see a mermaid in the water?
When fantasy becomes too much for some people, especially when they have had a few too many drinks, things can get a little crazy. To clear a few things up, there’s nothing wrong with the water, and the stories of a woman who was turned into a mermaid aren’t true. Strangely, as fact is usually stranger than fiction, a woman was caught in her neighbor’s pond working on her mermaid skills. That wouldn’t be much more than a bit of trespassing, if it weren’t for a few details.
The Union Parish Sheriff got more than he bargained for with this bizarre crime story
A 41-year-old Louisiana woman refused to leave her neighbor’s pond and attacked a deputy when asked to get dressed. Her explanation? She was working on her mermaid skills. Can you imagine being a police officer and simply asking an obviously drunk woman to put her clothes on, only to have her turn on you and begin attacking? That seems like a crazy story that could only be embellished on, but the facts are strange enough to make for a great story.
This wasn’t the first time the Louisiana mermaid woman entered the pond
Erin Sutton is the woman in question and was caught in a skinny-dipping incident that also became a trespassing case and a case of public intoxication. Despite the fanciful nature of her mermaid excuse, this Louisiana arrest was certainly warranted, especially after she attacked officers when they asked her to put her clothes back on. Whether she was offended by the request to cover up or angry because her mermaid time was cut short is uncertain.
This wasn’t the first time Sutton had entered her neighbor’s pond. She had received repeated warnings from the owners, but she ignored the warnings each time. Deputies who were called to the scene tried to reason with her, but, as happens many times with people who are heavily intoxicated, there was no reasoning with her.
The angry mermaid continues her tirade
Eventually, officers were able to get Sutton to leave the water and called EMS to evaluate her. When they tried to move her to a home, she charged one of the deputies, kicking and punching him. Although she was tased while charging, the electrical jolt had no effect on her, which is certainly alarming. She continued to attack and threaten the deputies and paramedics all the way to the hospital, where she was taken.
What are the charges against the Louisiana mermaid woman
You might think that a skinny-dipping woman would be charged with public nudity, but that isn’t the case. Sutton has been charged with three counts of resisting an officer with force or violence, two counts of public intimidation, two counts of battery of a police officer, one count of disturbing the peace/drunkenness, and one count of criminal trespassing. These should be enough charges to keep her from being able to harm others or herself for a little while. Some of the charges carry up to five years in prison, but most cases begin with a long list of charges that eventually get pared down.
The mermaid is on dry land for now
The bond for Sutton was set at $62,000, but it’s unclear if she is in police custody. Attempts to reach Sutton were unsuccessful, which isn’t too surprising. Other than the legal trouble she is in, the question remains of whether or not she really wants to be a mermaid, or if the actions were something that came to her mind because she was drunk. Either way, it seems like she might need some help going forward.
This is how stories begin
If you hear stories of a Louisiana mermaid woman in the future, it could simply be an embellishment on this story. In this case, the woman, who wants to be a mermaid, attacked officers and refused to comply because she didn’t want to end her time in the water. These facts could easily transfer into a fanciful story of a mermaid caught in a pond that refuses to become a government experiment and fights off the authorities sent to retrieve her from the pond.
What happens to Sutton as a result of a terrible night of drunkenness, trespassing, skinny-dipping, and police battery is yet to be determined, but hopefully she won’t go back into her neighbor’s pond again.
