Hobbies have been on the downswing for many years, but a new type called a micro hobby has emerged to fit into the busy world we find ourselves in.
Social media has replaced much of what used to be hobby time for many people. Instead of spending time doing something you love, you probably found yourself scrolling online or looking at various videos that are posted. Since COVID-19, hobbies are on the rise, but in a new form. You might enjoy a micro hobby, which is exactly what it sounds like.
What is a micro hobby?
Before we give you a list of great choices for this type of hobby, let’s consider what it is. Before the world got so jumbled up and busy all the time, many people enjoyed hobbies that allowed them to spend a few hours each week doing something they loved. This could be reading books, building model trains, collecting items, or learning something new. Hobbies are back but in smaller doses. Micro hobbies are exactly what they sound like. If you have ten minutes of free time, you can engage in one of these activities and give your mind a break from the rest of your challenges.
What are some great choices?
Keep a fish tank
Some people think it takes a lot of time and effort to keep a fish tank, but it really doesn’t Sure, cleanings and water changes take some time, but once you get the hang of it, you might spend as little as ten minutes a day with your fish, simply feeding them and checking on them. Fish are a great choice because watching them when you feel stressed or overwhelmed can be calming and give you the peaceful feeling desired.
Paint watercolors
It doesn’t take a long time to paint watercolors, and you can keep them in a portfolio. If you have a setup ready to go that you can work on for a few minutes each day, it can be easy to break away and spend a few minutes at your watercolors painting the background and the surrounding area. This could be a rewarding micro hobby that you’ll love for many years.
Enjoy pull-ups, or other exercise
Ten minutes might not be long enough for a full workout, but you could do a few pull-ups or other single exercise during this time. Maybe you choose to spend that time stretching each day, improving your flexibility. It becomes a habit and becomes a hobby that you look forward to enjoying during your short breaks. You’ll be glad to get to the pull-up bar and take your mind off other things in order to enjoy your quick exercise break that allows you to commit to a hobby.
Reading books
You don’t have to curl up for hours at a time to read books. Most books can be read in short increments that ensure you get the story without being too disruptive in your life. You might find that if you commit to this micro hobby eventually you begin to expand your reading time or find additional times during your day to get some reading done. Find something you want to read not something you have to read, and enjoy the stories that take you away from reality.
Enjoy casual photography
This could be a combination micro hobby that you can enjoy while you take a ten-minute walk each day. You’ll get a little exercise, take a few photos of what you saw, and use the images to create a personal journal of the experiences. When you venture out of your normal ten-minute area, you’ll be able to capture additional images that could be more interesting. The goal is to have some fun with it; even if you walk the same path or see the same items every day, maybe you could find ways to view them from different angles.
Learn a new language
You might never speak the new language you learn, but if you commit your ten minutes each day to learning five new words, it won’t be long before you’re putting full sentences together. This is a great way to learn something new and expand your cultural footprint. Eventually, you might understand enough new words in a new language that you choose to take a vacation to a country that speaks that language to try out your hobby skills.
Which micro hobby will you enjoy? Most of the older hobbies can still be enjoyed, but in shorter time allotments, making it easier to fit a hobby into your life during a small, ten-minute-per-day slot.
