Creepy sounds are part of the world, and some sounds seem to be unexplainable, but when it comes to nature, these are some of the creepiest sounds you’ll ever hear.
There are some sounds that send chills down your spine. Nature produces all sorts of interesting sights and sounds, making it easy to get frightened and scared easily. If you spend time in nature, there’s a good chance you’ll hear some sounds that you’ve never heard before, especially in strange and exotic places. That said, here are some of the creepiest sounds of nature.
Alligators Bellowing
Alligators are scary, especially around water where they have a serious advantage over people. Some American alligators can get up to 20 feet long, making them large and dangerous. During their mating season, they call out to each other with a bellow. Male and female alligators bellow, but the males are much louder. The sounds are like a low growl that seems to come from deep within them. If you hear the bellows of an alligator, you need to make a run for it. They don’t often attack humans, but you shouldn’t take a chance.
Wild Screams of the Lynx
Cats make a lot of interesting noises, but one of the creepiest sounds of nature is the scream of a lynx. They actually make several different noises for several reasons, with a long, moaning wail that’s meant to attract mates. These sounds can be rare because lynxes are rare, but you could hear these mating calls from the big cats in captivity. Other sounds made include a short, lower sound that sounds almost like a bark to help their kittens.
Howling Wind
The wind can be one of the creepiest things in nature, and it makes various sounds, depending on the trees, shape of the land, or the foliage in the area. Wind noises can be crazy and scary, especially if you let your imagination run wild and create scenarios in which you experience some interesting sounds. The howling sounds you often hear in scary movies are one of the creepiest sounds that could be heard in the wilderness. Despite understanding what causes wind to make these sounds, we can still find it very creepy.
The Drumming of a Ruffed Grouse
The Ruffed Grouse is a bird that plays a unique instrument. Most birds have a song and sing it loud, but this bird rums. The percussive sounds it makes can be heard or felt up to a quarter mile away. This noise might not be as scary as others on the list, but if you don’t know what’s making that drumming noise, you might find it to be one of the creepiest sounds in nature. To make this noise, the Ruffed Grouse repeatedly pumps its wings, which creates a deep, muted sound like a drumbeat. This noise is to claim territory and attract mates.
Bats at Night
Another commonly used noise in scary movies or television scenes is the sound of bats at night. You hear the high-pitched screaming sound of a cloud of bats, and you immediately know they are on the hunt. Bats are most active at night, which is the scariest time of the day. The sounds of a bat are high-pitched and creepy enough that you can hear them over long distances. Toss in the sound of their wings, and you’ve got a serious creep-fest.
Bear Growls
One of the creepiest sounds you can hear in nature, especially if you happen to be in a large area, is the sound of a bear’s growl. This is not a sound you want to hear when you’re on the trails, especially if it’s a large scream or growl that sounds like a mother bear looking for her cubs. Typically, bears only roar when facing conflict, which can often be with other bears, but you might be that conflict if you’re in their area.
Hyenas Laughing
There’s something both creepy and comical about the laughter of hyenas. These animals appear to be laughing and happy all the time, but they are deadly and dangerous. Their laugh is creepy and will quickly make your skin crawl with its high-pitched noise. This laugh is an indicator that they are either scared, excited, or frustrated. If you hear a hyena laughing, it’s most likely because they’re on the hunt.
These are only a few of the creepiest sounds in nature. Can you think of any others? Have you ever heard any of these sounds when you were out in nature?
